Three generations of friendly service

ALWAYS welcoming and always friendly . . . that’s what the customers say about a family business that has been trading in Oldham for more than 80 years.

Jackson’s started life as a cobbler’s, run by Albert Jackson and then by his son Jack. and now by Nick and Pauline — the third generation.

The premises are still in Albion Street, close to the town centre and only yards from where the business was founded in 1928.

“We have not moved far, just a few doors in Albion Street,” said Nick after expressing surprise at the nomination for a Pride in Oldham award by loyal customer Anne Brown.

Anne wrote: “The staff in Jackson’s shop are helpful, friendly and efficient and the customer is warmly welcomed. It is always a pleasure to go there.”

Nick was a little taken aback to have been nominated but recovered to say: “We always try to be as helpful as we can, even though we are sometimes like the tourist information office.

“People pop their heads round the door all the time asking for directions here, there and everywhere and we always try to oblige.”

In the years since Nick’s father took a back seat — although the family still help out in the shop so that Nick and Pauline can enjoy time off — the business has expanded from solely shoe repairs to also offer key cutting, engraving and trophy sales.

The offering may have expanded but the service remains exemplary according to Chronicle readers.
