Our unsung hero Phil

AN Oldham parish priest who has been described as one of the borough’s unsung heroes has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.

Father Phil Sumner of St Patrick’s Church, Union Street West, is said to have done wonderful work for the community. He has also helped parishioners through an inter-faith group.

A nominee said: “His work with Asian leaders has brought a lot of understanding between the white and Asian culture.

“Phil is liked and admired not just by his parishioners but by members of the Asian community. He really has helped build bridges.

“He gives so much of his time. He always has time for everyone. Let us honour this wonderful Oldham resident.”

Earlier this month Father Sumner (55) was nominated for a community cohesion award. This resulted from the successful inter-faith grass roots initiatives in Oldham.

Father Sumner spent 25 years in Moss Side where he used a helpful document
from Leicester entitled “Young, Gifted and Equal” as a tool to advocate respect for young people’s ethnic and religious identities.

In September, 2006, he was featured in the Independent’s Good List — along with 50 others who share a commitment to improving lives and changing attitudes.

The Independent said: “He has built coalitions across religious and ethnic divides... to nurture ethnic identity and increase selfesteem among children of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and African descent.”
