A LEARNING mentor who gives up her free time to ensure pupils participate in sport has been recognised.

Miss Karen Seth, who has been at Lyndhurst Primary School on Heron Street, Hollins, for the past 18 years, has earned a Pride in Oldham nomination.

She delivers after-school sessions for pupils five days a week and some sessions are held at weekends in a bid to keep the youngsters busy and off the streets.

And she constantly gives up her lunch hour to run a range of sports sessions for anyone that is interested.

Youngsters get to play football, volleyball and rounders and some of them have participated in major tournaments.

Miss Seth, who has a 14-year-old daughter, said: “We play different sports each night and it involves other staff from Lyndhurst, Lorna Philips from Hathershaw School and Sports Development, so it’s not just me.

“It is a team effort and we all work together.”

As a learning mentor, she aims to build bridges with the children and offers them support to build their self esteem and confidence.

She added: “My door is open to pupils anytime and the best part of my job is when you feel you have done something worthwhile to make them feel better.”

On her nomination, she added: “It’s really nice and I feel privileged.”

Miss Seth was nominated by former pupil, Rachel Birchall, who said: “The nomination is for all her hard work and unpaid time and effort she gives to ensure Lyndhurst pupils have the opportunity to participate in sport.”
