Rotary boost for Pride awards

THE Pride in Oldham awards have received another boost.

The Rotary Club of Oldham Metro has stepped up its sponsorship of the borough’s premier awards event and the Chronicle is delighted to have them on board as associate sponsors.

In the past, the Rotarians have given £200 cash prizes to the winners of the schools, voluntary and group sections at the awards and have been pleased to see their funds put to good use on a whole range of projects.

Now the Rotary Club of Oldham Metro will become full associate sponsors of the event and will also play a vital role when it comes to the judging process.

The announcement of the club’s extra involvement in Pride in Oldham comes during the week when presidency of the club changes. Outgoing president Philip Hibbert said it had been a successful year for the club, donating over £16,000 to charities and enhancing strong links with local primary schools — including involving over 1,800 pupils in a choral speaking contest over two days at Oldham Coliseum.

New president Gordon Russell said: “We are looking to play an active role in the Pride in Oldham awards as well as continuing to award prizes in the voluntary and schools categories.

“Pride in Oldham has been a wonderful event over the years and we have been involved since the early years and it continues to grow from strength to strength.”

Mr Russell added that, in his year of office, the club was hoping to carry on with its many fund-raising events and to try to help the smaller organisations with funds wherever possible.

Steve Duthie, newspaper sales manager at the Oldham Evening Chronicle, said that the ninth Pride in Oldham awards were now up and running and plans were already being made for the December 2 gala awards lunch.

“The Rotary Club of Oldham Metro have already been marvellous supporters of Pride in Oldham and their added backing is very welcome.

“Their enthusiasm and drive only adds to our efforts to make the 2010 event the best ever.”
