FAMILY and friends of John Seal have nominated the compassionate staff who cared for him during his final months for a Pride in Oldham Award.

The 77-year-old was admitted to the Saddleworth Suite for people with severe dementia at Chadderton Total Care nursing home in March.

He passed away in July and his wife, Mary, said that unit manager Steve Galvin and his staff provided outstanding care and support during those difficult months.

“They were marvellous. They are such thoughtful, good people,” said the 75-year-old from Royton.

“It made such a big difference. Even when he passed away they couldn’t have been better.”

John’s sister-in-law Josephine Mountaine (65), from Crumpsall, also nominated the unit in Middlewood Court, Chadderton, and said: “They looked after him so well. They were so kind to John and to us as well.

And friend Di Heywood (65), from Shaw, added: “I just can’t praise the nurses enough — they were outstanding.

“It is horrendous nursing but they just took it in their stride with so much love and devotion — nothing was too much trouble.

“They try to keep the patients’ spirits up and just go the extra mile. I also felt they cared very much for the relatives as well no matter how busy they were.”

The unit has around 20 staff from cleaners and maintenance to carers and nurses.

Steve said they all played their part and added “We provide care for a very vulnerable group of patients.

“Everybody is aware it is not an easy task to do that with any kind of dignity. We are really proud and pleased.”
