PRIDE IN OLDHAM AWARDS 2010
THE BIG freeze was melted by the pride in Oldham’s finest as they were hailed for their inspiring achievements.
The early wintery weather failed to derail a heart-warming ninth Oldham Evening Chronicle Pride in Oldham awards — a glittering event to honour unsung heroes.
A 200-strong audience, including dignitaries, were rewarded for braving the snow with touching tales of courage and selflessness at an energised Queen Elizabeth Hall.
From young to old and sporting superstars to stalwart fundraisers, a diverse cast of characters were honoured at what’s now established as the premier awards in the borough.
Conquering adversity to help others was a recurring theme. Boxing coach Charlie Henson was a winner for overcoming drug addiction to keep youngsters disciplined through sport, as were schoolboys Hamza Ali and James Howard who united to call for an end to racist attacks after being hospitalised in separate assaults.
It was a difficult task for independent judges to select those receiving coveted trophies — but there are only winners amongst the 33 fabulous finalists.
Oldham Mayor, Councillor David Jones said: “I’ve always enjoyed coming to the Pride in Oldham awards as they recognise a lot of unsung heroes. They are just doing it because they want to serve the community. It is humbling.”
Chronicle editor David Whaley said: “The Chronicle brings lots of important but bad news to readers over the year. Pride in Oldham is just our way of showing how much good work is done in the borough and this year was no exception — another memorable event.”
