PRIDE IN OLDHAM
CAFE chefs Darren Shelley and Mark Phillips’ friendly faces and voluntary work have earned them a joint nomination for a Pride in Oldham award.

The pair keep hungry tummies filled at Chadderton Court, Chadderton social inclusion resource centre with their best seller — the bacon butty — and a wide range of other dishes.

Darren (40), of Shaw, and Mark (48), of Hollinwood, met after signing up for some of the services on offer at Chadderton Court.

Darren was quick to offer his help in the cafe, 41/2 years ago, and Mark joined the ranks three years ago when he decided that he, too, wanted to help out.

They both do their share of the cooking and shopping. Darren does five days a week, including a stint on reception, and Mark four days a week. Both do some extra Saturdays on top.

Darren said both men loved the job and were proud and pleased to be nominated.

“I love the company as well as the work. We have a laugh and I’m always telling jokes. We enjoy being at Chadderton Court, and we are both going to do English and maths there next year,” he said.

Mark said of their nomination: “It’s great. We keep everyone going with food, and we have trained people up to work in the kitchens with us.

“Volunteering gives me something to get up for every morning, and I like serving different people and getting to know customers.”

The jolly pair were nominated by Daniel Francis, who sees them regularly when he eats at the cafe.

He said: “These two lads are great, friendly and supportive, despite their own difficulties. The Court is a great place and the people there work really hard. It’s brilliant.”
