A FIRE-FIGHTER who recently hung his helmet up for the final time after 31 years of service has been nominated for a Pride of Oldham award.

Former Oldham fire station watch commander Mark Beswick is fresh into retirement after battling hundreds of fires in the borough.

Mark, from Grotton, was based at the Lees Road station for the last 15 years of his career and now looks forward to spending time as a handyman at Oldham Coliseum.

Oldham crew commander Anthony Green said Mark (51) was a thorough professional in his service and a perfect role model for young fire-fighters.

His friend and colleague, said: “Mark has done numerous charity events throughout his career, and the list of rescues he has been on is endless.

“He has saved a lot of lives in his career, and not only his experience but his knowledge will be a great loss to the service.”

The humble father of two was integral in extinguishing the Siemens factory fire in Hollinwood 10 years ago and the 1984 Summit Tunnel fire in Rochdale, among hundreds of others. He was left shocked and overwhelmed at hearing the news of his nomination.

He said: “Every day has been different and when you become a fire-fighter, it is a job you join for life.

“Working in Oldham has been much more personal for me, with me living here and I have thoroughly enjoyed my service.”
