ENVIRONMENTALLY-friendly pupils who secured Eco School Status in just a matter of months are in running for another award.

Friezland Primary School received the national accolade in recognition of its measurers to improve the environment and save energy.

And head teacher Tracey Meadham was so impressed with members of the school’s eco council that she has nominated them for a Pride In Oldham Award.

The council is made up of pupils aged five to 11 and Mrs Meadham explained: “They decide how we can improve the ecology around the school. They get involved in litter-picking, in deciding which plants would be successful, looking after the plants we have and finding about the wildlife around the school.

“They have worked so hard and we are just so proud of the speed at which they did it. The group was set up by teacher Rebecca Keeley in March and by June they had the eco school award.”

To achieve Eco School Status the pupils had to show an assessor around their school and tell them about the green work they are doing which includes saving energy, recycling and supporting a charity in Gambia.

Mrs Meadham added: “They we so eloquent when they spoke to him. He was so impressed.

“These children are going to be children that go forward in the future and really keep these skills going. That’s what we want for our children at Failsworth.”
