A SCOUT leader has been nominated for a Pride In Oldham award in the voluntary category for her dedication to her scout group.

Wendy Brierley, a full-time maths teacher at New Bridge School for children with special needs in Hollinwood, fully involves herself in the extra-curricular activities outside of school hours, including choir, signalong and the scout group.

The 8th Scout group in Oldham was created by Wendy for children who have special needs and disabilities and is the first group of its kind in the borough.

Wendy, who has been a scout and cub leader for over 14 years, started the group in January last year and it has since grown to 25 members who meet once a week.

Wendy, a mother-of-four, said: “I’m shocked but really chuffed to receive this nomination, it’s really lovely.

“I started the group so that children with disabilities can be given wider opportunities.”

The scouts have an age range of between 11 and 18 and enjoy many activities provided for them at the group, the latest being a trip to France.

Deborah Quinn, who nominated Mrs Brierley because of her work with the children in the group, including her own child, said: “She runs the group for children with complex needs.

“She runs various groups including the scouts, as well as having a full-time job and family. She is truly inspirational and gives parents like me a break.

“She really encourages our children and we’re very grateful for everything she does.”
