Devoted church veterans praised

TWO volunteers at Oldham Parish Church have been nominated for a Pride in Oldham Award for their years of devoted service.
Verger and warden John Dunkerley and his partner Brenda Andrews, from Shaw, were put forward for the honour in recognition of the many hours they plough into the running of the church, John for over 30 years. John and Brenda prepare the church for services and events while. Brenda, who has helped for over 20 years also helps with refreshment provision.
The pair were nominated by church member Janise Cunliffe: “They do six to seven days a week preparing for every occasion at the church,” she said.
John said: “I just keep the place tidy really, which is why I’m surprised to be nominated for the Pride award.”
“We do it for the church and because we enjoy it,” said Brenda. “We’ve have also made a lot of good friends here. It’s lovely to be nominated for an award to recognise what we do.”
