URBAN ANGELS
A DEDICATED group of volunteers has been nominated for a Pride in Oldham award.
Urban Angels, run by Kelly Mayers, aims to improve the lives of young people in Limeside by providing dance classes, arts and crafts and social events.
After starting out four years ago at Limehurst Community Hall, the group has radically grown in size with hundreds of budding young dancers learning dance and even cheerleading routines.
Kelly said: “I am shocked that we have been nominated!
“We started because we wanted to make a difference in a deprived area of Oldham and we’ve gone from strength to strength. It feels great to be nominated as we’ve all worked hard to build up the group.”
The dancers also take an active fundraising role organising events for charities such as Care of Police Survivors (COPS) and Macmillan, and cheer on runners at the Manchester 10K event.
The group was nominated by David Halliwell, who was impressed by a performance: “I feel this group should be nominated for all the work it does in the community,” he said. “They provide great entertainment at local events and are very professional. The volunteers who run it are wonderful for setting it up, giving children something to do and encouraging them to be active.”
