STREETS Ahead members give up their Sunday nights every week to help the homeless.
The group was set up by sisters Wendy Mayall and Julie Mellor in November 2014, and is based at Wendy’s hair salon Streaks Ahead in Chadderton.
The two sisters previously helped homeless people in Manchester alongside two men who took supplies into the city every Tuesday. When the drivers left the group, the sisters decided to carry on and set up Streets Ahead.
They — with Wendy’s husband Jason and a team of volunteers — now head down to Manchester city centre every Sunday night to hand out food, sleeping bags and other useful items.
The group featured in December when members gave up a cosy Christmas Day to help feed the homeless. Wendy said: “We started to ask for a small donation in the salon if anybody had any refreshments. I am glad to say we have very kind-hearted clients.
“It’s wonderful for us to be recognised. It’s really nice to be nominated because we love doing what we do.”
