Ability Counts
Spreading the love of the beautiful game among children of all abilities is what has earned the Ability Counts sessions a Pride in Oldham nomination.
Heyside Juniors Football Club teamed up with Hathershaw College to run the weekly sessions for young people with a range of disabilities and special needs.
Not only do youngsters get a chance to play in the FA’s Greater Manchester Ability Counts league, they benefit from improved health and social skills.
Higher Failsworth
Budding gardeners at Higher Failsworth Primary School showed off their green-fingered credentials when they scooped a highly commended honour at Tatton Park’s RHS Flower Show.
Designed by the school’s gardening club, which was established in 2010, the garden was inspired by Failsworth born dialect poet Ben Brierley.
It was a well wisher impressed by their horticultural talents that nominated them.
Blue Coat
A group of four caring and compassionate Blue Coat school students sprang into action to help 85-year-old Alice Kenworthy when she fell and hurt her leg.
Twelve year olds Ella, Alice, Georgia and Daisy sat with a very grateful Alice, tended to her cuts, gave her water and even offered to walk her home.
After writing to the school and the Oldham Evening Chronicle to track down the girls, their helpful deeds were featured in the newspaper and saw them nominated.
