Unsworth under fire again as Latics tumble out of FA Trophy

Date published: 14 January 2023

Latics were sent tumbling out of the FA Trophy as Gateshead triumphed 3-1 at Boundary Park in today's venue-switched fourth round tie.

Veteran Peter Clarke scored for Latics in the first half, but it turned into another hugely disappointing day, particularly for the Latics faithful, many of whom again turned on manager David Unsworth.

Middlesbrough loanee Kamil Conteh fired Gateshead in front early on as he rifled home from the edge of the box.

Latics hit back before the interval when Clarke tapped home at the far post following a corner.

Gateshead made it 2-1 in the 86th minute when Robbie Tinkler notched.

The boo's then rang out when Gateshead skipper Greg Olley breezed past a couple of defenders before slotting home.

Gateshead moved into the last 16 of the Trophy, while Latics must now concentrate on dragging themselves away from the National League Drop zone.

Some Latics fans clearly feel it's time for a managerial change after another dismal performance from Unsworth's men.

"Simply not good enough," one fan posted on Twitter.

"Unsworth stood with his hands in his pockets all game offering no motivation to players at all.

"No midfield. Had an attacking team on paper and offered no attacking threat all game.

"Absolute shambles."

Another said: "That was an absolute disgrace."

Another fan posted: "If Unsworth doesn’t go we need fans back on the pitch.

"It’s an absolute disgrace."

A fan called Phil said: "For everyone who was at Altrincham and Halifax and thought it can’t get any worse… I give you the DU masterplan and Gateshead at home.

"Dave, the process ain’t working, we’re getting better players in and getting worse. Time to go."

Latics are back in action on Tuesday in the league when they head to Wealdstone.
