Mellon bags another hat-trick as Tranmere are sunk at Boundary Park

In-form striker Michael Mellon bagged his second hat-trick of the season as Latics beat Tranmere 3-1 at Boundary Park.

The on-loan Burnley striker's treble enabled his dad Micky to defeat the club he managed to two promotions.

Mellon headed the opening goal in the 31st minute from a cross by sub Jake Caprice, who two minutes earlier had replaced the injured Jack Stevens.

Tranmere's leading scorer Charlie Whitaker equalised in the 41st minute with a thumping free-kick from 25 yards, his 10th goal of the season.

Mellon restored the hosts' lead within two minutes of the restart as Caprice's cross was headed out and he chested the ball down before firing into the bottom corner.

He completed his hat-trick in the 61st minute, tucking away the rebound after sub Mike Fondop's shot hit a post for his 10th goal of the season.

Latics had to play the last 21 minutes with 10 men after Fondop was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball clash with Rovers defender Nathan Smith.
