Tyrer makes Roughyeds return

Kieran Tyrer will return to play for Roughyeds in 2024 on a permanent basis, after he signed a one-year deal.

The half-back, who can also slot in at full-back, impressed on dual-registration from Wigan Warriors last season.

Leigh-born Tyrer made eight appearances for the club in the 2023 League One season and scored four tries.

He also helped secure victory for Roughyeds in the first game back at Boundary Park, when he scored a try in the 40-24 win over Workington.

Speaking on the permanent switch, Tyrer said: “As soon as I heard about Oldham’s goals, I knew this was the right club to be at.

“The staff and board have made their vision clear with the squad that has been put together and we clearly want promotion.

“I really enjoyed my time on dual-reg with the club last season.

"Playing in the first game back at Boundary Park was a really good experience, too.

“For 2024, I want to show my running game and support play a lot and get the lads on the front foot through pace, along with my goal-kicking and overall kicking game.”

The son of former Oldham back Sean Tyrer, he started out playing for amateur club Leigh Miners Ringers, before earning a scholarship with Widnes Vikings.

He then joined the Warriors’ youth set-up and gained his first taste of League One with West Wales Raiders in 2022.

The 21-year-old also has championship experience having played for recently-promoted London Broncos in their 20-18 victory over Batley in June.

Tyrer’s arrival makes for a 24-strong squad, so far, and he will link up with his teammates next month ahead of the 2024 season.
