3-A-Day is a recommendation made by The Dairy Council to help you meet your calcium needs. 3-A-Day is not a Government recommendation or dietary guideline.

The Government recommends eating a healthy balanced diet which contains a variety of foods including plenty of fruit and vegetables, plenty of starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice, some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and lentils and some dairy foods. It also recommends that a diet should also be low in fat (especially saturated fat), salt and sugar.

Consuming a healthy balanced diet is essential for good health throughout life and is particularly important during childhood and adolescence to ensure healthy growth and development.

Unfortunately, the National Diet and Nutrition Survey conducted in 2000 reported that 24% of girls aged 11-14 years old and 19% of girls aged 15-18 years had calcium intakes below the recommended levels.
Milk and dairy foods provide a naturally rich source of many different vitamins and minerals essential to good health including calcium.

The 3-A-Day campaign was launched by The Dairy Council as a simple food based message to communicate how to include sufficient calcium in the diet to meet the recommended guidelines for different age groups.

The 3-A-Day concept aimed to improve calcium intakes through the consumption of dairy foods
