Rise in lead theft

HOMES across Saddleworth have been targeted by thieves looking to cash in on the rising price of lead.

Police in the area are urging residents and business owners to be vigilant following a spate of thefts in the past month.

Officers are advising the public to be more wary.

Neighbourhood Inspector Danny Milovanovic, said: “Crime is on the decrease in most areas, but we have had increases in lead thefts.

“It is important to ensure that all your buildings are protected from lead thieves.”

Thefts from motor vehicles are on the increase - with drivers leaving valuables in their vehicles, like sat navs, tools and laptops.



A FUN-DAY and duck race will be hosted by Delph Primary School in the village from 2pm on Sunday. The lucky first prize winner will scoop £250, with the race starting from the bridge in the centre of the village. A hog roast, face painting and food stalls will complete the celebrations.

OLDHAM Band Lees will take to the stage at Uppermill Civic Hall tomorrow from 8pm. Tickets are £7 from Uppermill Post Office, with a collection in aid of St John’s Ambulance on the night.



PLANNING permission is being sought to install two outdoor condenser units at the Co-operative Food Store in Lees, to replace the existing unit.



SHARE stories, rhymes and songs at fun-filled sessions for the under-fives at Lees Library on Monday at 2pm. The sessions are free and there is no need to book.



A lunch to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support will be served up at the White Hart in Lydgate on Sunday, starting at 12.30pm. Guests must ring Derek Heffernan in advance on 0161-652-3705.



JOIN the Diggle Diamonds for a coffee morning at the Hanging Gate pub in Diggle from 10.30am on Saturday June 25. Admission is 50p and there will be a home-bake stall.
