MUSICAL students at Saddleworth School will be featuring on a TV documentary.

John Matthews, who is producing the new BBC documentary “Madness on Wheels”, was so impressed on hearing the Saddleworth Guitar Group at the school that he promptly recorded them to feature on the film.

The students will now have to wait until the documentary airs next summer to hear their performance.

Mr Matthews heard the guitarists play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” at a concert last week.

He said: “I thought it might make a great end to our film. I asked Andy Housley, who runs the group, if we could record it and he said. ‘Are you joking?’. We recorded it six times and every time it was pretty much perfect.”

The recording was carried out by Hammerhead TV Manchester’s John Dardis and Kristian Edwards and Saddleworth School’s Mike Healey.

The new film, about motorsport in the 1980s, is being made by Manchester and Saddleworth-based Film producers Bigger Picture and is currently under production, to be delivered to the BBC at the end of January. The company recently made “Grand Prix: the Killer Years” also for the BBC, which was a big hit for the company. The recording will be available to listen to on the Saddleworth School website soon.
