QUESTIONS surrounding the site of Castleshaw’s Roman fort are now a step closer to answers.
Friends of Castleshaw Roman Forts have revealed proposals for a community excavation of the site.
Members of the group hope they will find answers to some of the questions that have plagued local archaeologists for years.
County archaeologist Norman Redhead said: “There has been some very interesting research already. But there are questions which still haven’t been answered. We want to know where the bath house was and we still don’t understand a great deal about the earlier fort that was there.
“It would be nice to go back and open up all the excavation trenches. It would also be nice put back some of the fort so visitors can appreciate it a bit more.
“The community should be doing that. We’d like to get the community involved.”
Around 20 locals have expressed interest in the project, and he is now arranging another meeting before applying for permissions from English Heritage and preparing a Heritage Lottery bid for the money to do the work.
