indifferent weather failed to halt the traditional event, which sees a garland of white roses placed on the statue of renowned local poet Ammon Wrigley to mark the annual occasion.
Saddleworth Parish Council chairman Brian Lord placed the garland on the Uppermill monument.
Sunday’s event began with a fanfare from a brass band at Saddleworth Museum gardens, followed by a reading of the “Yorkshire Declaration” by local resident Gilbert Symes.
Locals came out to support the day — normally marked on August 1, but this year celebrated early to attract weekend visitors.
