Green-fingered residents can get growing with the acquisition by Saddleworth Parish Council of a 2.6 acre plot of land in Uppermill for allotments.
The Canal and River Trust has agreed to sell the land alongside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
An allotment society is currently being set up to manage the area.
Parish council chairman Councillor Brian Lord said: “The provision of allotments is very much in line with the council’s plans to take a more active role in the parish.
“Expecting Oldham Council to provide allotments in Saddleworth is not realistic in these difficult times.”
The parish council expects a flood of applications for allotments.
