Reflecting a 40 per cent increase in sales of Christmas decorations in 2007 over 2006, Housing Units in Hollinwood has already dedicated 50 per cent more floor space to festive furnishings at its Wickentree Lane store.
“Initially, we hesitated over such a September launch, but our customers said we would be doing the right thing. While Christmas as a celebration is basically two weeks in December, preparation and planning is actually becoming an all-year-round matter for many people,” said Nick Fox, a director at the North-West leading home furnishing retailer.
Mr Fox, from Delph, believes Christmas is becoming bigger and bigger following the North American trend, with not only a corner of a room but the entire house being decorated and themed.
He added: “People accumulate high-quality decorations over the course of several years and spend a great deal of time planning and theming their homes. Some families are spending as much as half a day deciding upon a theme and choosing their Christmas decorations.
“As well as a celebration, it is also a period of huge psychological importance.
“There is no hiding the fact that this winter may well be tough. Therefore, a bright and cheerful well-decorated home that draws praise and comment from friends and family could well be a hugely uplifting.”
Established in 1947, Housing Units is a family-owned furnishings retailer stocking more than 30,000 high-quality lines across a range of departments.
