MORE than 300 Oldham and Rochdale residents have found employment in the construction sector with help from a partnership of councils, companies and colleges.
J21 is a training and job-finding initiative funded by the Oldham-Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder to help local labour to take advantage of construction projects across the two boroughs.
They also work in close partnership with both Oldham and Hopwood Hall colleges.
Local contractors are helped to win sub-contracting opportunities on the projects, and all contractors are encouraged to employ local people, whether skilled workers or new entrants.
Project manager Bob Barber said: “We have been really pleased to help so many people, men and women, from school-leavers starting out to experienced workers looking to update their skills.”
Oldham-based HMR Pathfinder director Alastair Graham said: “J21’s work means that local people and local companies are well placed to take advantage of current opportunities and will be better placed to withstand the economic downturn.”
The 300 include Geoff Waller (62), who was helped by J21 to secure the post of contracts manager with PGC Demolition.
He said: “This service is invaluable, especially for those with limited skills and experience. I hope it continues to benefit local businesses and people for many years to come”.
