Snowed under by new entries

ENTRIES which were initially a trickle have become a deluge in the last few days as the inaugural Oldham Business Awards hit the consciousness of the business community.

Such has been the response that the steering committee has extended the deadline for entries to Friday, February 13 — which will be a final cut off.

Oldham Chronicle circulation manager Steve Duthie said: “We had more than enough entries by last week’s deadline to run a successful event but it is obvious that people were still wanting to come forward.

“There was unanimity among the group that the deadline be extended but that’s it — the initial judging process will start on Monday, February 16 and no more entries will be accepted after February 13.”

This decision was taken shortly after four more sponsors were added to the growing list of supporting companies and organisations.

First Choice Homes Oldham has agreed to support the VIP reception and Money Controls Ltd, of New Coin Street, Royton, is to sponsor the champagne reception.

Also on the list of associate sponsors are Thorp Whyman Briggs, an architectural practice based at the Hollinwood Business Centre, and DCT Civil engineers Ltd, based at Prospect House, Featherstall Road South, Oldham.

FCHO chief executive Hugh Broadbent said: “We are delighted to sponsor part of this prestigious event to demonstrate our commitment to Oldham and its businesses.

“We employ more than 500 mainly local people and do business with lots of Oldham companies. The One Oldham Business Awards is a great way to share successes, particularly in these tough times.”

Steve Kilroy, from BAE Systems, one of the main sponsors and who is also helping organise event, said: “None of us knew, at the start of this process, how the awards would be received.

“I believe the response shows that Oldham is a great place to do business and we have much to celebrate.”
