AN Oldham man is learning to fit management into life after becoming a partner in the GSG Carpet Factory Shop Ltd, in Rochdale.
After a lifetime in the contract carpet industry as a fitter, Garry opted for a change of lifestyle when a family was imminent.
“He walked in off the streets and asked for some work,” said Sue Benson, a fellow director at the business in Ensor Mill in Queensway.
At that time Sue was a part-time employee of the Ryalux carpet manufacturing business which had left the Rochdale site but continued to make the luxurious carpet brand at sites in Heywood, Bury and Wakefield.
When bosses announced they were closing the factory shop, Sue and Garry were left “devastated” and decided to take matters into their own hands.
They recruited Gilles Coulombeau, from Sale, who had worked with Ryalux for two years as a management consultant and approached Ryalux with a bid for the factory. The business, which has since employed two of the six people initially made redundant by Ryalux, has gone from strength to strength in its new guise.
