25-years and drive doesn’t tire...

TWENTY five years ago, when Peter Beswick found himself facing redundancy, he took a deep breath and bought the company.

Convinced that he could make a go of the business, Mr Beswick, (54), from Springhead, is planning to celebrate a quarter of century of selling tyres to motorists from all the borough.

Originally working for Personal Tyres — when the business was based in West End Street — he was facing redundancy when closure was imminent. “I knew I could make a go of the business, so I bought it,” said Mr Beswick who has since grown the company into a more integrated motoring operation.

Having worked for a business which in those days dealt only in tyres, he was convinced that, given the right level of service and commitment, there was a future.

He immediately began to secure business contracts, many of whom are still with him today, and has also diversified into exhausts, servicing and MoT preparation.

His next expansion is to establish Personal Tyres and Exhausts as a licensed MoT testing station.

In 1994 he took a bold step to relocate into his current premises to Beever Street and he firmly believes this has been instrumental in the firm’s continuing success.

“We have some loyal customers, who bring their vehicles in the morning and either go to work or go shopping, and then collect on their way home.

“We are a town-centre business now and that has been important in our growth.” he said.

Fitter Chris Milburn, from Springhead, has been with the firm for 19 years and mechanic Andrew Yates, from Derker, for nine.
