FOUR enterprising hair stylists in Royton have overcome adversity to open a new salon.

Dawn Boswell, her niece Kylie Clegg and new work colleagues Hannah Broadhurst and Sherree Hopkins are putting the Unique salon on the map from premises in Rochdale Road.

Since embarking on their enterprise back in November, Dawn and Kylie — both from Royton — have had to overcome a number of setbacks, including a death in the family days after the official opening, plus the severest winter this country has endured for nearly 30 years.

Proprietor Dawn said: “It hasn’t been easy, that’s for sure but we are doing OK. People are beginning to find us and every customer has booked a return visit which says we are doing well.”

Dawn, who was previously in partnership at another salon in Royton, was persuaded to return to the industry by Kylie, who had been made redundant from her position at a Toni and Guy franchise in Rochdale.

“Kylie kept mithering me to open a salon and eventually we did,” said Dawn, whose husband Shane owns the building from where he operates his electrical industry training business Electrospec. Kylie and Dawn “persuaded” Shane to vacate his ground-floor training room to make space for the salon.

The family has invested more than £24,000 to create Unique, a unisex business offering the whole range of hair-styling and colouring.

Kylie, the manager, has recruited Hannah and Sherree and they run the business on a daily basis, with Dawn on-hand twice a week to offer guidance, experience and advice.

Says Kylie: “We are determined to make a success of this business.

“We didn’t have the best of starts, but we are slowly building our client base and who knows where this will all lead?”
