Oscar’s is riding high

AN equestrian business in Hathershaw is aiming to corner the market in safety and fashion items while also offering tack.

Oscar’s Equestrian represents an investment of nearly £40,000 for redundant electrician Chris Burlison.

The 42-year-old, from Fitton Hill, has taken over refurbished premises in Ashton Road for his enterprising venture.

Offering products for horse and rider, the business represents a significant career change for Chris, who has twice suffered redundancy. He said: “After the second occasion in November, 2009, I decided to try and do something for myself.

“It was not the first time I had been made redundant and I was tired of relying on other people for financial security.

“I have the backing and support of my family.

“My two older daughters, one of which is at university and the other who is in part-time employment, are going to work voluntary for the start-up of the business.

“This will relieve some financial pressure in a climate which has hit a recession. If the business is successful, I will look to employ staff, either through my daughters or externally."

One of the biggest obstacles Chris faced was persuading the big brand suppliers to support Oscar’s Equestrian, named after the horse owned by his daughter Alice.

Their response to a new business was to adopt a ‘see how you’re doing in six months’ time’ attitude or ‘let’s see which other big companies come on board’ — which made Chris feel like he was going round in circles.

He fell back on equestrian wholesalers to provide a range of products but days before the official opening, brand names NAF, Justtogs and KP Equestrian offered support.

“Getting the KP range — named after founder Katie Price — was a major boost,” Chris admitted.

The final cog in the new business wheel was a training course in the supply of safety equipment, including hats and bodywear.

Chris added: “I chose Ashton Road as I have lived in the area all my life.

“This section of Ashton Road has been regenerated over the past two years and a lovely cluster of businesses are beginning to emerge.”
