A MOTHER and daughter have achieved their dream of opening a salon in Shaw.

Julie and Beth Norbury have launched Rare in Trent Road, investing more than £40,000 in the refurbishment of the previous salon and offering a totally new service.

Julie, (44), from Rochdale — although keen to stress her Shaw background and her daughter Beth, (20), felt the “time was right” to invest in the salon.

Julie told me: “I have been a mobile for 20 years and after all that time on the road we both knew it was time to have our own salon.

“I have always wanted to own this salon.

“I have been aware of it all my working life and we were all delighted when we able to do complete a deal with the previous owner.”

The “we” in that sentence is the family for Julie’s brothers John — an interior designer with his own business in Hull and Anthony Melia, a photographer with a business in Leeds — have pulled together to make the dream come true.

Beth, who has experience with another salon in Shaw and is also a qualified beautician, was full of praise for the way everyone worked together to create Rare. The mother and daughter owners have recruited trainee stylist Jodie Rowbottom, from Heyside, to complete their team and, a month into the new venture, they are “delighted and surprised” with the level of support they are enjoying from clients. “A lot of my old customers are now coming to the salon and with Beth’s beautician skills we are able to offer a wedding special occasion package which is proving really popular,” said Julie.

The clientele is so far 80 per cent women and 20 per cent men and they are hoping that once words gets around of their specialist service in colour correction and as being a Wella stockist. they will soon see a return of their investment.
