Promoting better education for all

OLDHAM’s pioneering City Learning Centre is gearing up for life after Government cuts.

The educational resource, in Hollinwood Avenue, Chadderton, opened seven years ago to support the borough’s schools and colleges at the high-end of IT and computer technology.

The facility has outstanding facilities including an auditorium, seminar rooms, iPads and interactive equipment.

Manager Dave Barter is concerned that the funding, which has allowed CLC to develop into one of the jewels in Oldham’s crown, may dry up at the end of the current financial year.

“We have no prior knowledge but given the level of cuts, and the impending comprehensive spending review, we have to be concerned,” he said during a breakfast event designed to introduce the wide-range of facilities to the business community.

Not too many took up the offer, which was shame as the business people of Oldham could certainly benefit from many of the features available at CLC.

Dave added: “Our mission is to bring new technologies to the young people and schools of Oldham to promote improved educational opportunities for all.

“We have had a financial partnership with the Government in all of our seven years — now we need to promote a partnership with the whole of Oldham and we want to make available our outstanding resources to support local business.”

He believes that by making use of CLC, businesses will have access to some of the finest facilities in the region while supporting the centre in extending its cutting-edge work for education.
