Business leaders from Oldham heard about how Regional Science Centre Oldham will help prevent future skills gaps and grow science-related industries in the borough.
A packed room at Oldham Sixth Form College heard from avid science ambassador Bob Cywinski, a professor at University of Huddersfield, Oldham Sixth Form College principal Jayne Clarke, Oldham Council children’s services director Michael Jameson and Web Applications managing director Craig Dean about the importance of business involvement in science education.
Professor Cywinski said: “The regional science centre is exactly what Oldham needs.
“It provides an inspirational hub for everyone interested in science and gives industry the chance to get involved with equipping young people with the skills and qualifications needed to grow their businesses.”
The centre is seeking sponsors from industry in order to fund programmes to encourage more young people to study science subjects.
College principal Jayne Clarke said: “It is great to see that so many businesses are keen to find out more about science education. We are keen to work with them to show how, together, we can help to develop the workforce of tomorrow.”
Chairman of the Towards a University Town project board is Councillor Kay Knox, who added: “Oldham Council and Oldham Sixth Form College have worked hard to bring the Regional Science Centre Oldham to fruition.
“It’s now up to businesses in the region to make the most of the opportunities it provides.”
Launched in partnership with Oldham Council and Oldham Sixth Form College as part of the council’s Towards a University Town’ project, the centre is due to be completed in April, ahead of the first full intake of students from September.
