Talking economics with the man in the know

Spencer Dale, the chief economist at the Bank of England, is coming to Oldham.
He is to address Oldham business people over lunch at the Clough Manor, Denshaw, on Wednesday, October 19.
Mr Dale will offer his views on the economy, welcome feedback from the audience and debate the challenges facing the business community in the country in general and in Oldham in particular.
Hosted by the increasingly influential Oldham Business Leadership Group, the lunch is free to attend.
Places are limited, but to reserve a place email June.smith@oldham.gov.uk .
There are not too many occasions when a man of Mr Dale’s standing comes to Oldham and the OBLG is to be congratulated on what can be regarded as a coup at a time when the state of the nation’s finances has never been so hotly debated.
This promises to be a fascinating event and if Mr Dale is half as interesting — and amusing — as Dennis Turner when the then HSBC Bank chief economist visited Oldham Chamber of Commerce, then we are all in for a real treat.
