AN OLDHAM man has invested his redundancy pay in a new business venture aimed at introducing people to the world of technology.

Will Preston, 30, from Alt, has set up Supported Learning Solutions, taking space in the Meridian Centre, King Street.

People from Oldham and surrounding areas can get free tuition from Will and his colleague Danny Proffitt. Danny, from Fitton Hill, is also out of work but is using his technical skills to help Will launch the new business.

“I have first-hand knowledge of how important it is to have computing skills,” said Will.

“So many jobs can be accessed online; employers increasingly want application forms and CVs by email. Not everyone has these skills — but they can spend a few hours each, at no cost to themselves, and get them.

“One man came in for four hours and he was competent when he left; he just took to it,” said Will. “Other people take a little longer. But they can come in as often as they wish. The computers and the help are here.”

Will is taking referrals from agencies and organisations eager to take advantage of his skills, including JobCentrePlus.

He added: “The training doesn’t have to be around seeking a job — millions of people shopped online this Christmas. Anyone can come and learn how to do so securely. We can also teach people how to send and receive emails.”

Will has secured Government funds and is hoping to get more from April, as he builds towards making Supported Learning Solutions a sustainable business. Contact hih on 0161 624 5505.
