Saving a packet from packaging
Date published: 07 August 2012
RECYCLING is turning a store’s £30,000-a-year cost for disposing of packaging into a profit.
Getting rid of unwanted packing materials used to cost Housing Units a pile of money as little as five years ago.
But the waste materials are now being sold to recyclers to offset the cost of disposing of non-recyclables. The family-owned store recycles timber, polystyrene, cardboard, plastic, metal and paper and is set to turn a small, if unexpected profit.
Director Nick Fox said: “We’ve moved from a potential annual cost of £30,000-plus - that’s the bill we had as recently as 2006 — to a cost in the past year of just £1,300. If the trend continues, we’ll see our recycling actually turn a profit in the near future.”
