Sophie’s Crafts Ltd, a new business at Hill Stores, Oldham, hosted a successful opening demonstration day to signal a new chapter for local cottage industries.
The idea is the brainchild of the owners of PSP Meesons, Greenacres, who saw the potential after visiting a trade fair in Birmingham.
Two existing Meesons staff. Diane O’Connell from Greenacres and Charlene Darley, from Derker, have a background in craft work and Diane is now manager of the shop, in Greenwood Street. She expects to soon host craft sessions supported by Charlene, who has a degree in textile crafts.
“We have a huge range of products,” said Diane. “Everyone is saying this is just what Oldham needs, so we are optimistic.”
The open day brought together a host of craft workers from how to make greetings cards to knitting and crochet work. There is another demo day this Saturday.
