OLDHAM College students are gaining work experience by helping to build a website linked to the new Oldham Business Edge magazine.
The site will promote the new free, quarterly magazine published by the Oldham Evening Chronicle and available to subscribers.
Oldham College is a sponsor of the magazine and was keen that students get some work experience out of the project.
The college is launching a major work placement campaign next year and wants Oldham employers to offer high quality opportunities. The college has invested £22 million in facilities and services to focus on vocational skills, apprenticeships, training and recruitment.
Robbie MacDonald, Chronicle business editor, welcomed the college’s request for software and graphic design students to get involved with developing a website.
Liam Lloyd, Oliver Gartside, Courtney Ridgway, Andrew Wilson and Paul Brown have put their coding and design skills to use in building the magazine website.
Software student Andrew (17), from Hyde, said: “It’s good to work in a team and to develop a website from scratch which will be seen by the public. It’s great work experience which will look good in my portfolio.”
Joanne Manship, Oldham College’s digital and creative faculty head, said: “This is an ideal collaborative opportunity between the college and the magazine. It is a great opportunity for our students to develop this website from the start, and to update and enhance it in the future.”
Robbie said: “This is a real work placement based on a real project. The website will promote the new magazine and also feature its own content, such as social media, blogs and videos.”
The website will be launched in the New Year.
