ROCHDALE Road is now open after a huge sinkhole, which left residents without water and motorists facing diversions, was repaired in rapid time.
The stretch of road, near the Halfway House pub in Royton, was re-opened yesterday afternoon following a week of closure.
The sinkhole appeared last Wednesday morning after a burst water main washed away the ground underneath causing the road surface to collapse.
Residents were faced with a 12ft pit and eight properties were without water as engineers from United Utilities arrived at the scene and closed the road.
Diversions were put in place via Shaw Road, Royton, Crompton Way and Rochdale Road, Shaw and Broad Lane, Rochdale.
The engineers, who brought bottled water for residents, ripped the road up to assess the extent of the damage.
The engineers had fixed the damaged water main by Friday and were then left with the prospect of repairing the road. They had to break up the shattered Tarmac and concrete before filling in the hole and laying a new surface.
In a video on the United Utilities Twitter account a spokesman thanked people for their patience.
