CANCER Research UK has urged Oldhamers to unite for World Cancer Day to help beat the disease sooner.
The cancer charity called on adults and children alike to "play their part" to mark the annual day of action on Saturday, February 4.
The Oldham Evening Chronicle has joined with Cancer Research UK to tell Oldham's stories in the lead-up to World Cancer Day.
Among the articles which will feature are a Failsworth mum and daughter whose lives have been affected by cancer, a team of Chadderton volunteers whose garage sales, coffee mornings and other activities help to raise around £25,000 for research each year, a local scientist working in the field of drug discovery and an Oldham public health nurse making a difference in the field.
Cancer Research UK spokeswoman for Oldham and Greater Manchester Alison Barbuti said: "World Cancer Day provides an opportunity for people in Oldham, as well as across the world, to show that together we can be a powerful force to help beat cancer sooner."
Symbolise
'Unity bands' in navy, pink and aqua will be on sale for a suggested £2 to raise funds for life-saving research.
The bands are made of two parts, knotted together, to symbolise strength in unity and the power of what can be achieved on a united front.
Ms Barbuti added: "So many of us know someone affected by cancer, and wearing a unity band or donating is a simple and easy way to show your support.
"Whatever your motivation - to remember a loved one, celebrate people who have overcome the disease, or to rally in support of those going through treatment - World Cancer Day is a chance to get involved and help more people survive this disease."
One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime and every year 1,100 people are diagnosed with cancer in Oldham.
Unity bands are available from various locations across Oldham including Werneth Golf Club, the Rose of Lancaster Pub and Restaurant, Healds Green Old School and the Oldham Chronicle office from today.
