Signs to respect verges

CHILDREN have been busy creating signs urging residents to look after the grass verges in Oldham.
Their efforts are to tackle what has been described as "increased neglect and destruction" of the green borders in Garden Suburb.
Signs have been placed in Rising Lane Close in an attempt to encourage residents to take care of the green spaces.
Littering and tyre marks were highlighted as two issues which are affecting Rising Lane Close and Middlegate as well as nearby streets.
One of the hand-made signs read: "Do not drive over the grass."
Resident Margaret Burston, of Rising Lane Close, said: "Vehicles of all shapes and sizes have been driving across the verges. It is absolutely disgraceful.
"People aren't bothering to look after the verges. There are huge deep tyre marks which have just been left. There has also been littering."
Some tyre tracks are understood to have been made in connection with development work in the area.
Resident Sylvia Dempster, who has lived in the area for more than 15 years, said: "People should not be allowed to neglect or destroy the verges. We have got to stand up for keeping things looking nice. Garden Suburb is like a little oasis in the middle of Oldham."
