Neighbour rescues man from kitchen blaze

A MAN was rescued from his Mossley home after fire engulfed his kitchen.

The ground-floor fire, which started as a result of unattended cooking, spread through the kitchen of the terraced property and caused extensive damage.

Firefighters were called to reports of a house fire in Denbigh Street shortly after 11.30pm yesterday.

Crews from Stalybridge were the first to attend and were soon joined by pumps from Oldham and Mossley.

Stalybridge watch manager Greg Punshon said: "The house was well alight. A neighbour had rescued a man from the house by kicking in the door.

"The resident was treated at the scene and suffered smoke inhalation but declined hospital treatment."

* A SKIP fire spread to a Failsworth business after it grew out of control last night.

Fire crews were called to Ashton Road West where carpets and other waste had been set alight inside the skip.

But the flames had begun to set light to the side of Bickley C&J Carpets and burned some of the wooden side panels on the wall.

Crews were able to check there was no fire damage inside.

* BINS were set on fire near the skate park in Churchill Playing Fields.

Danny Plant said: "I was walking my dog when I saw between eight and 10 youths of varying ages with wheelie bins near the skate park. Within minutes I could see fire coming from the bins and each of the youths move away in different directions."

Oldham's blue watch fire crew attended the incident at about 8pm. A crew member said: "It was suspected deliberate ignition."
