A THIEF stole a large amount of cash and assaulted a man in Shaw on Sunday night.
Police were called to Kershaw Street East just after 10pm to reports of a robbery and an assault.
Shaw and Crompton Parish Council confirmed that a parish councillor, who has not been named, and a member of the Shaw and Crompton Parish Council Event Management Team, were involved in the incident.
It followed a successful Shaw and Crompton Parish Council Family Fun Weekend and the pair were taking the money related to the event to the nearby Parish Council Offices at the time.
In a statement, Shaw and Crompton Parish Council said: "At approximately 10pm on Sunday evening, following the conclusion of the annual Shaw & Crompton Parish Council Family Fun Weekend, a Parish Councillor and a member of the Event Management Team were assaulted and robbed of cash on the Kershaw Street East car park as the pair were taking the money to the nearby Parish Council Offices for safe keeping.
"The money in question related to the fairground operator's hire fee payment to the Parish Council, however it isn't clear how much cash was involved.
"The matter is currently subject to a police investigation."
Police confirmed that a man had been assaulted in the incident and the offender had made off with a large amount of cash.
