DON'T be a "coulda, woulda, shoulda" and get applying for the next series of The Island with Bear Grylls.

That's the advice from Oldham businessman Frank Rothwell who appeared in the Channel 4 extreme survival show in May after seeing a story in the Chronicle asking people to sign up.

Flat-capped Frank - as he became known for wearing his trademark headgear throughout his time on the Pacific island - said it was an incredible experience and as production company Shine start the search for next year's islanders he urged Oldhamers to step up to the mark.

"My advice would be get on with it and apply immediately!" said the 66-year-old thrill-seeking entrepreneur, founder and managing director of Manchester Cabins who was the show's oldest contestant.

"Don't be a coulda, woulda, shoulda. It's an opportunity not to be missed.

"You don't have to be an achiever, they're looking for all-party players and personalities of all extremes."

Before the show aired Frank - who used his ingenuity, engineering skills and global sailing experience to survive, light fires, catch live prey and harvest coconuts during his time on The Island - told the Chronicle: "I am a person who always seizes the opportunity.

"An adventure like this cannot be bought. I am a doer. I could not let an opportunity like this pass."

So if you fancy limpet broth, killing caiman and being marooned on an island with a group of unpredictable strangers, now is your chance.

Shine are looking for men and women over the age of 18 to take part in the show.

The premise of the show, according to Bear Grylls, is this: "This is Lord of the Flies meets Bear Grylls meets Darwin's survival of the fittest," he said.

"Man has moved further and further from his hunter-gatherer origins. We take food, shelter, warmth for granted; we barely have to expend any time and energy to get them. I want to find out what happens when you strip people of all the comforts of modern life."

They are looking for fit and able people each with their unique skill set, from a variety of backgrounds and professions who are confident in their ability to thrive. You do not need any experience in adventure or survival pursuits to participate.

The show covers reasonable pre-agreed losses of earnings for everyone who participates.

To apply go to www.theislandwithbeargrylls.com and the closing date for applications is Monday, August 7.
