Project makes sure pool memories don’t go under
FROM little ones learning to swim to one of the country’s greatest Olympians — they have all made a splash at Chadderton Baths.
Champion swimmer Henry Taylor — who won four gold, three silver and four bronze medals between 1908 and 1920 — was an instructor at the pool which opened in 1937.
Generations of locals have had fun there but the former splendour of the art deco building has now faded. The popular facility has been empty since a leaking roof forced it to close two years ago.
Local photographers and a literature development office have been working with Chadderton Historical Society to record memories of the baths.
The session was part of a series of workshops to celebrate the history of the building and neighbouring Chadderton Library which are being replaced by a new health and well-being centre.
Veronica Jackson, executive director for adult and community services, said: “Although we are looking toward to the future with this new state-of-the art facility, it is important to celebrate and record our history.
“It is also hoped that some elements of these projects can be incorporated in the new development.”
