Swinging Sixties’ Day pulled in the crowds

SHAW stepped back into the Swinging Sixties for a fabulous weekend of groovy family fun.

The Shaw and Crompton Parish Council-organised event replaced the Victorian Weekend which normally takes place in the town.

But many aspects remained unchanged with the familiar charity market, fairground rides and vintage vehicle rally all taking centre stage.

But there were also dance displays, a free climbing wall, street entertainer and a miniature railway chugging along Market Street.

The vehicle rally is now in its 20th year and saw transport from different eras tour the streets.

And shop assistants and stall holders joined in the fun by donning 1960s clothes.

Downpours failed to dampen the fun as people made the most of the bright periods.

Parish council chairman Councillor Hazel Gloster declared it a success but said no decision had yet been made whether the event will change again next year.

“It was quite lively,” she added. “It went really well despite the weather. Madd for Dance did a fantastic dance display, they were really good, and the climbing wall attracted quite a lot of people.

“The attendance was steady throughout the weekend but the weather did stop people coming out. The vehicle rally was really well attended this year and we will increase the categories next year as there were so many new vehicles, which was really interesting.”
