Post office closure fight
Date published: 15 July 2008
AXING two popular post offices would rip the heart out of the community.
That’s the view of Councillor Mark Alcock, who said the branches in Buckstones Road, Shaw; and Duchess Street, Lower Rushcroft; often had long queues inside.
He added: “Closing these branches will result in near-by shops suffering as well as the people who use them.”
Members of the Shaw Parish Council opposed the planned closures.
Leader of Shaw Parish Council, Councillor Diane Williamson, proposed a motion recognising that the post offices were vital to vulnerable members of the parish.
She said: “We are in support of Oldham Council’s consultation process and would urge residents and businesses to inform it on how they will be affected by the proposed closure.
“We strongly believe that closures should not be imposed on those post offices which wish to remain open.”
Deputy leader of the Lib-Dems, Councillor John Hall, seconded the the motion.
