CCTV footage has been released in a bid to trace a gunman who threatened staff in a foiled bank raid.

Police have issued the stills showing the dramatic moment when the robber walked into Barclays Bank in Market Street, Shaw, and aimed a handgun at terrified staff.

As reported by the Chronicle, he struck on Wednesday, June 25, shortly after 9.30am.

The man put on a black balaclava before shouting “money” — but the woman behind the counter immediately pressed an alarm, which activated a smoke device.

As the bank filled with smoke, the offender ran out of the door empty handed.

It is believed he ran down an alleyway beside a shop on Market Street.

He is described as white, 5ft 9ins tall and was wearing a blue waterproof jacket, blue jeans, black shoes and was carrying a royal blue rucksack.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and hope the pictures will encourage people to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Lindsey Curry, of Oldham CID, said: “If it wasn’t for the quick thinking actions of staff this incident could have been much worse.

“This man seems to think nothing of brandishing a gun and he needs to be caught and held accountable for his actions.

“If anyone saw the offender or recognises him from the description, please get in touch.”
