A local historian has become the first heritage champion for Oldham.
Councillor Mike Buckley, chairman of Saddleworth Historical Society, is Oldham’s new historic environment champion and will act as the focus on heritage issues.
The council says he will highlight the important part the historic environment plays in regeneration, jobs, education and business opportunities.
His appointment has been backed by Councillor Mohib Uddin, Cabinet member for Regeneration.
He said: “I see it as a valuable addition to the work we already do in regenerating the borough.
“I believe that Mike can contribute to our work by ensuring that Oldham’s valuable heritage is not lost. Our heritage is not only about the physical environment but it is also about the communities that live in those areas.
“We need to make sure that community spirit, investment in education and job creation all add to our young people’s future heritage.”
Councillor Buckley said: “Our historic legacy is important in creating a sense of belonging and shaping the identity of the place we live. I will strive to make sure that the historic environment forms an important part of our strategy in regenerating the borough.”
Heritage champions is an initiative supported by English Heritage.
