ACE stroke . . . Harry Wrigley scored his first hole-in-one at the age of 80
IT’S been a long time coming . . . but Grasscroft golfer Harry Wrigley has got his very first hole in one at the grand old age of 80.
Harry has been a member at Saddleworth Golf Club for 45 years and was almost ready to quit the sport after suffering circulation problems and a decline in form.
But on Sunday he hit the ball 157 yards on the fifth hole and it sailed gracefully through the air and straight in, making Harry the oldest member of Saddleworth Golf Club to get a hole in one.
Harry, of Clough Orchard, said: “It was an uphill hole so I couldn’t see where the ball had landed, but the men I was playing with said they thought it had gone in.
“I couldn’t believe it when we went to see and I didn’t believe it was my ball at first.
“Greg Norman would have done anything for a hole in one at the Open on Sunday.
“I was absolutely elated and it has rejuvenated my love of golf.”
As is tradition at Saddleworth Golf Club, Harry’s feat was announced in the club house and his fellow golfers were offered a tot of whisky to mark the occasion.
He said: “My circulation is not perfect but I will keep going with the golf now and maybe get my second hole in one before too long!”
